Matt Birch­ler is encour­ag­ing peo­ple to have a lit­tle imag­i­na­tion when it comes to prod­uct design:

I bring this up because I think these are fan­tas­tic exam­ples of how we talk about prod­uct deci­sions as well. We act like X can not change or be any oth­er way because of Y. But often, Y is not an immove­able object and it too can change.

Ok, I agree. But if we can have a lit­tle imag­i­na­tion when it comes to Apple prod­ucts, why not pol­i­cy that affects people’s day to day life? When I talk to peo­ple about social­ism, some peo­ple look at me like I’m being unre­al­is­tic and naive. And sure, I’m fuck­ing naive. But I’m also a per­son who isn’t con­tent with the sta­tus quo.

Why do we accept work­ing 40 hours a week? Why do we give employ­ers five days of our lives, when we only get two? Why do we seem to demand democ­ra­cy in pol­i­tics, but not at the work place?

Why have we accept­ed pover­ty and hunger when Jeff Bezos makes $8.9 mil­lion every hour? Why do we accept cap­i­tal­ism when this pan­dem­ic has shown us that it’s great­est strength is cre­at­ing greater inequality?

This is how things have been done, but don’t we deserve bet­ter? Don’t we deserve a soci­ety that gives us all a fight­ing chance, gives peo­ple more own­er­ship and say in the work­place, and can put the needs of peo­ple over prof­it? Things can change, and they need to.
