Let’s Imagine a Better World
If we can imagine better tech products, we can imagine a better society
Matt Birchler is encouraging people to have a little imagination when it comes to product design:
I bring this up because I think these are fantastic examples of how we talk about product decisions as well. We act like X can not change or be any other way because of Y. But often, Y is not an immoveable object and it too can change.
Ok, I agree. But if we can have a little imagination when it comes to Apple products, why not policy that affects people’s day to day life? When I talk to people about socialism, some people look at me like I’m being unrealistic and naive. And sure, I’m fucking naive. But I’m also a person who isn’t content with the status quo.
Why do we accept working 40 hours a week? Why do we give employers five days of our lives, when we only get two? Why do we seem to demand democracy in politics, but not at the work place?
Why have we accepted poverty and hunger when Jeff Bezos makes $8.9 million every hour? Why do we accept capitalism when this pandemic has shown us that it’s greatest strength is creating greater inequality?
This is how things have been done, but don’t we deserve better? Don’t we deserve a society that gives us all a fighting chance, gives people more ownership and say in the workplace, and can put the needs of people over profit? Things can change, and they need to.
